A gerdan is a long band of beads woven into a pattern that falls onto the chest, worn over a vyshyvanka or an ordinary dress; a sylianka is a denser, shorter band closer to the throat, for every day; a prypynda is a stylised apron knotted in macramé rather than beaded. The materials are few, beads, seed beads and a needle with thread, and a pattern never repeats, so every piece is one of a kind.
